Site tours happen every open night, which is currently Tuesday nights at 6PM.
What is HSBNE? HSBNE is a community workshop / makerspace
Does HSBNE have any staff? HSBNE is run entirely by volunteers
How do machines get maintained? Often by volunteers, but you don't need to be a volunteer to contribute. Anyone can make changes to improve the space. If making larger changes please co-ordinate with others online.
Does HSBNE supply materials? No. However, there are some materials in the free racks that is donated/leftover material but we don't supply materials. HSBNE does supply consumables for the machines such as saw blades and belts for the linishers. HSBNE members occasionally do group buys of materials.
When is HSBNE open? Members have access to HSBNE 24/7 and we have an open night every Tuesday night
How did you get all these machines? Through grants, donations and membership fees
How do I sign up? Go to HSBNE.org and click the signup button. Enter the code from your swipe card, pay the membership fee and pass a short induction that contains some info such as the wifi password.
Where can I store projects? Large projects can be stored in the blue rack in the blacksmithing area. Small projects can be stored in members' storage 55L container
How much is the HSBNE membership? $25 per week or $15 per week for volunteers paid monthly
Can I get a discount? Yes, by volunteering!
What's involved in volunteering? Typically about an hour a week for a recurring task. Such as running the BBQ, running social media, etc.
How does HSBNE decide what to buy? HSBNE has a meeting every month where we decide how to run HSBNE. Every member is allowed to vote.
Can I bring a friend? Yes, you can have up to two friends with you, but you must be working together with them.
Can those under 18 sign up? Unfortunately not due to QLD's working with minors (blue card) laws, however a parent/guardian can sign up and the underage member can come on-site under the supervision of the parent/guardian.
Does HSBNE run classes to teach XXX? No, though if you ask people will point you in the right direction. Woodshop and Metalshop have regular meetups to discuss/work on projects. We would like to run classes, if you are interested in running a class please let us know
Once I've become a member can I use all the machines? Some machines will require you to complete an induction to ensure that you can use the machine safely.
How do I get inducted on machines? See the wiki for how to get inducted on tools.
Do I need to do the induction if I already know how to use the machine? Yes, we need to be able to verify that you can use the machine safely.
How do I get help? The best place to get assistance is via our chat server on Discord. If you ask on Discord you will surely get a friendly response.
How many members do you have? Around 100 at the moment.
