This term glossary exists to document terms you might hear used commonly at HSBNE but not outside it. Please feel free to add to it.

IPA - Isopropyl Alcohol

PCB - Printed Circuit Board

Taz (the) - Lulzbot Taz, a 3d printer made by Aleph Objects. We were donated a Lulzbot Taz 5 by Aleph.

Space (the) - Refers to HSBNE in general, but people tend to use this as shorthand.

The general consensus is it’s pronounced ‘AYCH ESS BEE ENN EE’.

Yes and no, we try to make sure our events are as open to the public as possible. Tuesday night meetings are open to anyone. In addition, we have workshops and other open events that anyone can attend. If you’d like to know if people are at the space, or arrange a time to visit, your best bet is to post to the HSBNE Forum.

Thanks! Join in on some of the projects and events we have going on and help spread the word about HSBNE. Give us a like/check-in on our Facebook page as this helps spread the word. That’s what we consider helpful support.

It doesn’t particularly matter. Hackerspace is the preferred term of the ‘hackerspace movement’. Makerspace could be used when you don’t want to scare someone who doesn’t understand the true history of the word hacker. (see question below)

No, that’s not what we do. We use the term hacker in the historical ‘creative use of technology’ sense, not the ‘media boogeyman cybercriminal’ sense. We make stuff that’s ‘hacked together from different parts’.

No. (see question above)

Well, thank you! We do already have quite a lot of equipment. We love donations but have some restrictions on the type and amount of things we can take. Please check out our donations page for more information.

The hackerspace doors open to the public every Tuesday afternoon from 5:00 pm till late. If you're a member, the hackerspace is open 24×7 via RFID cards, 365 days a year, including public holidays. In fact, especially public holidays. Be sure to check out our Facebook page for the latest information about open days/nights and other events.
